Graphic Novel of the Week for July 27th: Runaways: Dead End Kids
Helena returns to share her thoughts on this week's featured graphic novel, Runaways: Dead End Kids by Joss Whedon:
Runaways: Dead End Kids is about the children of the Pride (the villains of the Marvel comic universe) and how they rebel against their moms and dads by fighting for good and justice in the world.
In the book, the Dead End Kids accidentally zap their way back in time to 1907 New York, and it got me thinking about the nature of time travel. Having faked my way through upper level science in high school and then gone all liberal-arts-y at university, I find physics pretty near incomprehensible. How can you go back to a time when you haven't yet been born but you need to put a certain chain of actions in play in order for your mother to become pregnant with you?
Anyway, I went to the Internet for some instructional videos on time travel. Here are two. The first is from the Discovery Channel site and offers lots of information (although for me not much illumination) and the second is a silly spoof that is for your entertainment only.
And since we're talking about the past, here's a photo from the Ontario History Quest site (class photo day at Annette Street Public School right here in Toronto about a decade before the Dead End Kids land in New York). Enjoy, history buffs :)
Helena is a teen librarian, but she reads widely - everything from teen coming-of-age stories to Agatha Christie to picture books about cars with her one-and-a-half year old son Lucas.

Wow! getting zaped all the way back to 1907? Thats a pretty long time ago i can't imagine 1907 in New York! The pictures were black and white right? And mostly nothing was invented! Well im going to have to find out how the Dead End Kids got zapped to New York and how they got out of their? And i mean, who is against their own parents and i can't belive it either Fei!! Appartnely the Dead End Kids! I have a pretty good feeling this is going to be a funny, great, witty book that i can't wait to read!
Happy Reading!
