Last Tuesday, teens at Jane/Dundas were given a sneak peek into the mind of an award winning author as Marina Cohen stopped by the branch. The event allowed aspiring writers to better understand the overall writing process, particularly key areas such as character development, idea generation and the exciting, yet occasionally scary world of book publishing.

Leah Bobet Visit

Leah Bobet's visit at Centennial Branch was amazing and here are 5 interesting facts about Leah:Above_large

5.  Leah works part-time at a science bookstore because writing is her full-time job

4.  Leah wrote 5 novels and 2 unfinished ones before she got the idea for Above and this was when she was still finishing her university degree

3.  Leah loves her writer’s agent Caitlin Blasdell because she can focus on writing while Caitlin can focus on the business side including the legal contracts and international book sales. The book Above will be published in Brazil and Germany.

2.  The manuscript for Above was send out to Young Adult publishers and Adult publishers but lucky for us Arthur A. Levine Books picked it as a Young Adult Fantasy book

1.  It took 5 years minus 1 week for her to publish her debut book “Above

The chaosEarlier this summer we were lucky enough to have Award-winning and wildly imaginative author Nalo Hopkinson stop by the Parkdale branch to visit the Word Out program and do a reading from her latest book, The Chaos.

NH07_pressIts always interesting to hear an author read from their own book; sometimes it can be amazing, and hearing the book as the author intended it can bring whole new aspects that I'd skimmed over to life. On the other hand, sometimes I wish that I hadn't heard the author at all, if they impose their own personality on a book too much through the reading, instead of letting it develop and grow on its own in the mind of the reader.
