Young Voices Conference 2012

August 28, 2012 | Cameron | Comments (1)

Young Voices SkullThe North York Central Library will host an annual youth event that focuses on the artistic and creative talents of the youth within the city of Toronto. The Young Voices Conference is organized by the Toronto Public Library with a focus on creating space for youth to get a chance to develop their creative skills and interests in a setting outside of the classroom with professionals from those fields.

This year the Young Voices Conference is attempting to think outside the box and the keynote speaker will be filmmaker Peter Stebbings. Peter is the writer and director of the film "Defendor" starring Woody Harrelson. Peter will be kicking off the conference with an address and will also be giving two seminars on creative writing with a focus on film making.

Other workshops include: graphic novels, spoken word poetry, urban fiction, photo-journalism(bring a camera), song writing, illustrations and spoken word with an open mic session. Also all involved participants will be leaving that day with an instant anthology of all the work that was created during the conference.

The conference is specifically for youth ages 12-19.

And it is FREE!

This is an all day event and space is limited so make sure that you pre-register by following this link:  www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/yvconference

Marina Cohen Picture for Blog

Last Tuesday, teens at Jane/Dundas were given a sneak peek into the mind of an award winning author as Marina Cohen stopped by the branch. The event allowed aspiring writers to better understand the overall writing process, particularly key areas such as character development, idea generation and the exciting, yet occasionally scary world of book publishing.

Amazing SF Booksale at Lillian H. Smith!

August 21, 2012 | Thomas Krzyzanowski | Comments (1)

Lillian-h-smith-library-04Like SF?  Take your pick with the 'S' (Science, Speculative, Sword & Sorcery, Scary, Superhero, Slipstream, Steampunk). As long as the 'F' stands for fiction, the Lillian H. Smith booksale has got it!

And they're not just discarded library books either. Thanks to the generosity of countless donors, there are also have lots of unstamped unlabelled editions.

They've even made a half decent attempt to sort it (by author) but have left it just random enough to make sure you'll want to explore.  There will be mass market paperbacks, trades and hardcovers all at mind blowing you-must-be-living-in-a-fantasy-world prices

So stop by the Lillian H. Smith SF Booksale this weekend!

Lillian H. Smith Branch (239 College St)
Friday Aug 24th 5:00 - 7:30 p.m.

I Got the Grade 9 Blues...and I'm not even there yet. WELCOME!

August 18, 2012 | Marie | Comments (6)

Hey! Are you going into grade 9 in a couple of weeks? AARGH!

Everyone remembers something about grade 9 - and it's usually not a fond memory.  For me, the first day of grade 9 was the last day for 20 years that I wore a dress. It was my grade 8 graduation dress. There is a whole novel contained in that first day of grade 9. After that, it was jeans, a tshirt and (usually one of my dad's) an old sweater.

Grade 9 can be scary. And stressful.  There will be tears (I cried me a river). But maybe not.  Come to Kennedy/Eglinton Branch on Thursday August 23 at 6 pm.  The Kennedy/Eglinton Youth Advisory Group (KEYAG)has created a really great program about meeting new friends, getting help with stuff, and keeping organized. It's called "Welcome to Grade 9".There will be lots of great tips, tricks and survival strategies for sucess and happiness in grade 9 - and beyond!

You'll also find out about the Youth Advisory Group and how teens are shaping the way the Toronto Public Library serves Toronto. Maybe you'll even want to get involved. Lots of branches have YAGs.

All the content has been created by KEYAG - many of whom just finished grade 9 and learned a whole lot that they want to share with you.  Are you just going into grade 8? That's OK! Come too! You'll be even more prepared for Grade 9 when it happens to you!

Evan Munday was Awesome.

August 17, 2012 | Cameron | Comments (0)

Dead kidEvan MundayOn Saturday July the 21st the North York Central Library was proud to present Toronto based writer Evan Munday, who gave a workshop on mystery writing. This workshop was presented as part of the Word Out 2012 Summer Reading Club and it was a smash hit.

Evan used both his mystery writing and illustration skills to help the workshop attendees to better understand the format and functionality of a mystery. He was witty and charming in his presentation and had all of the teens write the first page of their mystery, while having already decided the ending.
