Lena Dunham Behind the Scenes
On Thursday, October 23rd, a newly-green-haired Lena Dunham, joined us in the Bram & Bluma Appel Salon at the Toronto Reference Library to discuss her first book. On September 30th, she released her collection of essays and advice, Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s ‘Learned’, for which the 28-year-old director/actor/writer famously netted a $3.7 million advance!
Lena Dunham isn’t the kind of girl that you’d expect. She’s not the kind of girl who will hide her mental health struggles anymore nor the one who would let life pass her by. Lena lives her life knowing that she wants to tell its stories, and she made that clear during her Appel Salon interview.
Miranda July says “very few women have become famous for being who they actually are, nuanced and imperfect. When honesty happens, it’s usually couched in self-ridicule or self-help." I think that’s true and I guess for me that’s what stands out so remarkably about Lena: the girl who wryly and now famously announced herself to her parents as the voice of her generation, or at least “a generation.”
The evening was a success with over 1000 Lena fans swarming the Toronto Reference Library. Lena connected with all her fans and spent time personalizing her book during the Author Signing portion of the evening, leaving fans gushing in delight as they left at just how sweet she is.
Joining Lena on stage was Canadian writer/TV personality Elaine Liu who rallied in her introduction “you’re here because she writes...No matter how much she tells us, it’s not enough".
Interviewing Lena was Canadian film journalist, television personality and freelance celebrity interviewer Johanna Schneller. As Johanna pointed out – Lena leaves her essays open-ended, leaving you to make your own conclusions.
Throughout the evening, we took numerous photos of Lena including behind the scene shots. Check out our facebook page for the complete collection!
