The Baby Yoda Scale of Cuteness

If you’ve been anywhere near the pop culture corner of the internet recently, you’ve undoubtedly encountered the cuteness that is Baby Yoda*. And if you’re anything like me, you probably melted into a puddle of goo at the sight of the adorable little creature. For those who have no idea what I am talking about, Baby Yoda is a character on the new TV series, The Mandalorian, set in the Star Wars universe. The show follows a bounty hunter who discovers that the target he is sent to retrieve is a tiny green infant, and the permanently masked hunter appears to be just as swayed by those big eyes and pointy ears as everyone else.

Baby Yoda is arguably one of the cutest fictional characters ever created, but he’s not the only character that makes us squee in delight. I’ve spent the last couple days wracking my brain and polling my co-workers to come up with a list of other beloved characters that are worthy of what I am now calling The Baby Yoda Scale of Cuteness.

*Yes, I know that it’s a baby of the same species as Yoda, not the actual Jedi Master himself. However, we have no proper name, species type, or gendered pronouns for the little guy so the internet has collectively agreed (for the most part) that he shall be known as Baby Yoda until we are otherwise informed.

My Selections

Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon

Toothless is the main dragon from the How to Train Your Dragon movies, based on Cressida Cowell’s book series of the same name. Take all of the adorable mannerisms of both puppies and kittens, add in the ability to fly and some unshakable loyalty, and you’ve got Toothless. He is one of my very favourite fictional characters and I’m not ashamed to admit that I have, on more that one occasion, watch video clips of the lovable reptile to cheer myself up.

What is there to say about this endearingly earnest, tiny dancing tree other than “Awwwww!”

Although Baymax first appeared in a Marvel Comics series in the late 1990s, it is the version from Disney’s 2014 film, Big Hero 6, that makes me smile. He is a large, fist bump-loving squishy robot who just really wants to help people.

Totoro from My Neighbor Totoro

The titular character from the classic Miyazaki film My Neighbour Totoro is a forest spirit who I think looks a bit like a combination of a rabbit and a startled owl.

My Co-Workers’ Selections

Kim's Choice: Hobbes from the Calvin and Hobbes comics

There are few things as adorable as the bond between a child and their beloved stuffed best friend.

Kate's Choice: Nezu aka Mr. Principal from My Hero Academia

Principal Nezu from My Hero Academia. Written and Illustrated by Kōhei Horikoshi

This dog/bear/mouse combo from the popular manga series My Hero Academia is almost too cute to be a principal. In fact, his cuteness is a running joke in the series.

Joey's Choice:  Pigwidgeon the Owl from Harry Potter

A slightly more obscure choice, Pigwidgeon is Ron Weasley’s owl in the Harry Potter books. He is gifted to Ron in The Prisoner of Azkaban and is known to be an adorable, if troublesome, little owl. Sadly, Pig doesn't get a starring role in the movie adaptations but you can read all about his antics in the books!

Corrine's Choice: Piglet

Andrew's Choice: Caterpuppy from House 2: The Second Story

This unusual little guy is definitely the most obscure entry on our list, coming from the 1987 comedy horror film House 2: The Second Story. The caterpillar-dog hybrid might be pushing the bounds of some definitions of “cute” but it’s perfect for those of us, like my colleague Andrew, whose prefer their cute with a hint of weird or creepy.

When I started polling people about their favourite cute fictional character, the sassy little chameleon from Tangled was a go-to answer for just about everyone.

It wouldn't be a list of cuteness without WALL-E.

There were SO MANY other characters that didn't make this list (due to lack of space, not lack of cuteness).  What are some of your favourite fictional characters that are Baby Yoda-level cute?
