Have you had a cronut?

Cronut
By now, you may have heard all about the infamous cronut burger through the food poisoning case at the Canadian National Exhibition. The burger caused over 200 people to become ill. Toronto Public Health reported that staphylococcus aureus, a bacteria, was present in lab tests performed on the burger. It has been discovered that the bacteria was found in the maple bacon jam.

But that is not what this blog is about. I began planning for this blog last month. However, due to the incident at the CNE, it has overshadowed the delicacy known as the cronut.

The first time I heard about the cronut was on a gossip blog. It was reported that Emma Roberts, niece of Julia Roberts and the star of several teen dramas like Nancy Drew, tried to cut in a long lineup so she could get a cronut. When I read this, I was puzzled. I haven’t heard the word cronut before. What was it? I thought, maybe a limited edition designer bag? Shoes? Nope. It was a dessert. A pastry. More specifically, it is a combination of a croissant and a donut.

The cronut was created by chef Dominique Ansel in New York. Since it was introduced to the public, there has been an overwhelming demand for it. Only 300 are made a day and people lineup as early as 6 am for the dessert. Here is a blogger’s cronut experience. There is also a black market where people are reselling it for a premium price, offering to stand in line for a fee or even offering special services for the pastry.

The dessert is so popular that it inevitably created many copycats. This led Ansel to trademark the dessert.

So I guess in the meantime, unless you decide to make a trip to New York and wait in line or try one of the cronut imitations, you can make your own creation. Maybe an ice-caroon (ice cream + macaroon) or piepop (pie + cakepop). And maybe it could become the next big thing. Here are some dessert books from the library for inspiration:

Big book of cakes  Better homes and gardens cupcakes  Larousse on pastry  Moufflet

Sweet Paris  Grace's sweet life  Piece of cake  Patisserie

Les petits macarons  Bake it like you mean it  Cake pops  Mini donuts

Here's a video from CNN Money about the cronut:
