Clarification about Youth Hub services at Malvern branch

A recent media report has suggested that the youth hub at Malvern branch has been closed since 2020.  In fact, the youth hub at that location has been open, other than a period during the pandemic when all library branches were closed. When the youth hub reopened following the pandemic closure, it was relocated into the main branch due to safety and security issues associated with the use of the original space. Youth hub services continue to be available in the main branch area at this time, pending a redesign of the original space to address safety and security concerns.

A full health and safety risk assessment of the branch was recently conducted by the library in partnership with the union and specific steps were identified to enhance safety and security prior to relocating to the original space.  Those changes are expected to be completed by early 2023 when the original space will reopen. The branch will continue to offer youth hub services in their current location until then.

Youth hubs are welcoming drop-in places for teens after school and in the summer, where helpful staff are always available and teens can study, chat with friends, use technology or take part in activities such as arts and crafts and gaming. Librarians are available to provide school support, lead programs and connect teens with community resources. Free, nutritious snacks are offered daily. There are 23 youth hub locations across the city.

Youth Hubs support the eight service areas of the library’s Youth Strategy (PDF).
