Toronto Public Library is thrilled to announce that Scarborough Civic Centre branch, the city’s 100th library branch, is now open.

City Librarian Vickery Bowles and Toronto Public Library Board Chair Ron Carinci formally opened the branch with a special ribbon cutting ceremony this morning. Library customers were led into the branch by Chinese lion dancers and enjoyed a morning of festive opening ceremonies and branch tours.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am to be opening Toronto Public Library’s 100th branch in Scarborough,” said Vickery Bowles, City Librarian. “The branch is a beautiful, open space that combines the things we’ve come to expect from libraries – comfortable lounge and reading spaces, a wide variety of materials, knowledgeable staff – with a focus on flexible and collaborative spaces, as well as access to technology for all, that that will take us well into the 21st century.”

Branch features include:

  • A collection of 42,000 books, audiobooks, magazines and DVDs in English, Chinese, Gujarati and Tamil
  • Free wifi and 18 public access computers
  • A Digital Innovation Hub that makes new technologies, including 3D printing, available to all
  • A KidsStop Interactive Early Literacy Centre for children birth to five and their caregivers to learn and play together
  • Programs for kids, teens and adults
  • An outdoor reading garden and green roof

“I’m looking forward to seeing the branch as a hive of activity in Scarborough,” said Ron Carinci, Toronto Public Library Board Chair. “Our vision is of a library that will be an extension of this rapidly growing community’s living, working and social space. We’re delighted that we can now say that we are serving people in 100 different communities across the city.”

The branch is open Monday to Thursday from 9 am to 8:30 pm, and on Friday and Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm.
