The Toronto Public Library Board met on January 19, 2015 at the Toronto Reference Library. Key topics discussed include:

2015 Operating Budget Update

The Toronto Public Library Board approved a revised budget request (PDF) that achieves the City staff-recommended budget increase of 2.3% over the 2014 budget without cuts to the collections budget or changes to open hours at neighbourhood branches.

The Board’s original operating budget request (PDF) (approved in November 2014) represented a 2% net increase over the 2014 budget.

The revised budget request maintains hours and collections and recommends a reduced cut to the library’s security guard budget from $0.513 million to $0.200 million, as well as a lower draw on development charges for collections from $0.507 million to $0.306 million, which results in an amended budget request of $171.6 million net ($188.2 million gross), representing a 2.3% increase.

The Board rejected the City staff recommended cut to the collections budget and standardization of open hours at neighbourhood branches.

The City of Toronto’s Budget Committee will review recommended 2015 budgets in February. The public will have an opportunity to provide input on the 2015 budget schedule on February 2 and 3, 2015. The Executive Committee will consider the budgets on March 2, 2015, followed by City Council on March 10 and 11, 2015. Full 2015 Budget Schedule.

Toronto Public Library will announce dates and times for public consultations about the budget shortly.
