Learn About Settlement Support and Toronto Newcomer Day: May 25, 2021
As Toronto Public Library expands online services to support Torontonians in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Library Settlement Partnerships (LSP) continues to assist newcomers with their settlement needs. For over 14 years, TPL has partnered with local settlement agencies for LSP, with the goal of helping newcomers settle over the long term.
LSP, funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, supports newcomers at every stage in the settlement journey, through one-on-one information and referrals, as well as group programs. At this time, the multilingual service is offered remotely, online and by telephone (in-person service is not possible at this time). This is to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Connect directly with an LSP Worker by phone or email to learn more or to sign up for an online program. These programs are taking place on a third-party online platform. The settlement workers can help walk you through the steps of using their selected platform carefully.

To support your Canadian Citizenship Test preparations, TPL has a free practice test available online. The practice test is available in English as well as in French. The test has some questions taken from the Discover Canada book and questions related to Toronto and Ontario. You can answer all of the questions, or a random set of 10 or 20 questions:
The test is interactive, so as you answer each question, the program will let you know if you’ve answered correctly or incorrectly.
On May 25, 2021, join TPL in celebrating Toronto Newcomer Day online! Toronto Newcomer Day is an annual event that welcomes newcomers to Toronto, helps them access a wide range of services, and celebrates their contributions to the city. In years past, the event took place in person, and this year the celebration has moved online to keep everyone safe. All are invited to participate in activities and enjoy the entertainment.
Tune in live for our special program, Journey to Embracing the Arts with Koom Kankesan: A Newcomer's Story. Koom shares his life journey and cultural challenges of being a newcomer and choosing a path in the arts:
Toronto Newcomer Day 2021 also includes an engagement session with City of Toronto Mayor John Tory, entertaining performances, information fair, virtual tour of City Hall, and the Welcome Gesture. The Welcome Gesture, led by Dreamwalker Dance Company, is a movement experience designed to celebrate the Canadian values of diversity, mutual respect, and freedom of self-expression through the language of our bodies.
