Discontinuation of Microfilm/Microfiche Service

Effective September 1, 2017

On September 1, 2017 Family Search will discontinue its microfilm distribution services. The last day to order microfilm will be on August 31, 2017. Please see the Family Search  FAQ Page for further details.

The change in service is the result of significant progress made in Family Search's microfilm digitization efforts and the obsolescence of microfilm technology.

Digital images of historical records can be accessed in 3 places on the Family Search website under Search:

  • Records include historical records indexed by name or organized with an image browse
  • Books include digital copies of books from the Family History Library and other libraries
  • Catalogue includes a description of genealogical materials (including books, online materials, microfilm, microfiche, etc.) in the Family Search collection.

To order microfilm/microfiche to be viewed at

Toronto Reference Library up to August 31, 2017:

Microfilm and Microfiche orders for titles in the Family History Library Catalog must be completed and prepaid through an online account

You can choose Toronto Reference library as a pick-up location. Microfilm or microfiche orders for pick-up at Toronto Reference Library will be delivered to the Toronto Star Newspaper Room desk in the basement and can be viewed on ScanPro microfilm readers. Images may be printed and/or saved to a USB memory stick.

International Genealogical Index (IGI)

The International Genealogical Index (IGI) online was developed from a microfiche index to the genealogical holdings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons).  It includes birth, christening and marriage information from the early 1500s to 1875 as well as information added by the Church members.

Although the Humanities and Social Sciences Department, 2nd floor, Toronto Reference Library, has microfiche copies of the 1984 and 1992 editions of the IGI for Canada, Great Britain, Ireland and the United States [Film F I 611], there are a number of enhancements to the online version of the International Genealogical Index (IGI):

  • Additional names have been added
  • Some individuals are linked into families and can be displayed on family groups and pedigree charts.
  • The index is searchable by given name, surname and state

Family Search is a service provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Salt Lake City, Utah.
