New and Noteworthy Picture Books: September 2023
We're dedicated to bringing the best and brightest books to our library collections. Here are some picture books we are really excited about that will be hitting shelves soon.
Mr. Fiorello's Head by Cecilia Ruiz (ages 5-8)
Mr. Fiorello loved his luscious curly locks. Mr. Fiorello loved his hair so much that he never wanted it to go away. But sometimes, the things we love the most leave us. Will Mr. Fiorello accept the things he cannot change about himself?
Dear Stray by Kirsten Hubbard and Susan Gal (ages 3-7)
A little girl adopts a stray kitten from an animal shelter, identifying with the kitten's tiger heart, scratchy claws and prickly temper. They both learn to give each other a little space and time to trust one another.
Drake the Super-Excited, Overeager, in-Your-Face Snake: A Book about Consent by Michaele Razi (ages 4-8)
Drake the snake loves giving big hugs; however, some of his friends want him to ask permission first. Should Drake try and do something different? A beginner friendly book for children about the importance of consent.
Flat Cat by Tara Lazar and Pete Oswald (ages 3-7)
Flat Cat was born flat. Flat Cat could slither, drift, roam and take a catnap in any nook and cranny. Until one day, Flat Cat ended up in the washer and dryer. Flat Cat was not flat anymore, he was fluffy, puffy and furry!
I, Sea by Suzanne Sutherland and Ashley Barron (ages 3-6)
Follow along on a sea adventure with a tabby cat and crab. Repetition of the same two sounds, "I" and "sea," is a simple and fun way to introduce readers to the world of homonyms.
Jeffrey Loves Blue by Loretta Garbutt and Lily Snowden-Fine (ages 4-7)
Jeffrey has difficulty leaving his comfort zone to try something new. Blue is Jeffrey's favourite colour. It's the only paint colour he uses and the only colour he wears. But when a classmate wants to use the blue paint, Jeffrey will have to try to paint in a different colour. This gentle picture book navigates emotions, empathy and compromise.
