Happy Birthday, Marc Brown!
Born on November 25, 1946, Marc Brown is one of the most prolific names in children’s literature. He is best-known for his bestselling Arthur books and the animated series by the same name.
Marc was at home one night when his son, Tolon, asked for a bedtime story.
“Tell me a story about a weird animal”, Tolon said.
Marc racked his brain and started to think about animals alphabetically: Aardvark. That didn’t take long! Arthur the aardvark was born and his relatable, everyday adventures have captivated young readers ever since.
You can browse through a great selection of Arthur titles on our website, which include a mix of picture books and chapter books in a variety of formats. Be sure to check out three of my personal favourites:
Arthur's Tooth (Ages 3-6)
Arthur Locked in the Library (Ages 7-9)
Arthur's Eyes (Ages 3-6)
In addition to the Arthur series, Marc has illustrated other critically acclaimed books, including the popular Monkey series and these standouts:
Wild About Books by Judy Sierra (Ages 3-7)
Mary McScary by R.L. Stine (Ages 4-8)
Advice for young writers
For all the aspiring young writers out there, Marc recommends to “read as much as you can, keep a journal, and write about whatever interests you and draw whatever you find interesting. Writing and illustrating are a lot like playing basketball or the piano: you have to practice, practice, practice.”
Happy Birthday, Marc! Here's to many more years of great writing and illustrations.
