Ages 5 - 9
Katherine Johnson loved numbers! She also loved to learn. Katherine was very bright and only 18 when she graduated from university. Katherine dreamed of working as a mathematician. Finally the day came and she got a job working for the government. When the Apollo 13 crew was in danger of never making it back to earth, Katherine had to do the math. The crew used her calculations and got back on track! This is a great book that touches on tough subjects like racism and sexism, but also teaches us that hard work and determination can help you achieve your dreams!

A whale calf and her mother share one song as their two hearts beat. But then a harpoon comes between them and the mother is taken away. The calf wanders for decades until she hears the heartbeat of a young child on a boat. Together they create a new song for the world, a song of empathy and compassion. This book has a little bit of text, but with colour and illustration we get full and emotional story of loss and hope. In the author note Evan Turk shares some history on whaling, and the meaning behind the imagery.

Volume two will be published in November, but if you can't wait, the series exists as a webcomic at webtoons.com.
