Dad-Dad-Daddy-o! New Kids’ Books
It’s almost June and so it is almost time to celebrate a very special guy in your life -- dads, stepdads, granddads, maybe an older brother who played a big role in raising you. Let’s raise a glass to dads! A lot of new picture books all about dads are arriving in branches just in time to make this Father’s Day (Sunday, June 19 – don’t forget!) extra special. Here are three of my favourites plus a few honourable mentions.
I Wonder : Celebrating Daddies Doin' Work by Doyin Richards
“Hello, little one. I am so happy you are here with me.” Each page depicts beautiful photographs of dads and their children experiencing all aspects of life together. The phrase “I wonder…” is repeated as the narrator is speaking directly to his children wondering if they value and love their time together as much as he does. The answer of course is unequivocally YES!
Dad School by Rebecca Van Slyke, Illustrated by Priscilla Burris
When a young boy’s father tells him that he also used to go to school, the boy wonders what that would have been like. He assumes that his father went to Dad School to learn how to be the amazing dad that he is. In his mind, dads learn all about telling stories, making ice cream sundaes and giving piggyback rides in Dad School. Naturally he thinks the most important thing that was learned in Dad School was how to be his dad!
The Best Part of Daddy's Day by Claire Alexander
Daddy is a construction worker and is working on a building right next door to a little one’s school. During recess, our young one climbs to the top of the jungle gym to see if he can see his Daddy operating the crane waaay up high in the lot next door. He sees someone inside the crane! It turns out his Daddy was in the crane and could see his son waving to him. This is a great moment in father and son’s day however the best part is still at the end of the day when they are together.
You may want to check out these new dad (and granddad!) books too!
Happy Father's Day everyone!
