Changes to Computer Classes at Cedarbrae this Spring.

If you've been regularly attending our free computer classes at Cedarbrae, you may have gotten used to our general lineup of classes each month. However, moving into April and May, there will be some changes to the schedules: we will be offering some classes every two months instead of every month. The classes that will most likely be affected are our Word Basics (parts 1 and 2) classes, as well as our Email Made Easy (parts 1 and 2) classes.

Don't be too disappointed though - we still offer a number of classes monthly! We're also always working to bring you new classes based on growing interests, so look forward to ongoing classes covering special topics like Facebook, eBooks & eAudiobooks, and Genealogy resources online.

Crunch Time!

Oh, yes, it's exam time for many of our younger Cedarbrae customers!

The library is packed to the max, so if you're planning on getting some studying done, here's a few helpful tips:

If you have a large study group, ask if there is any study space available in our larger program room on the main floor. If there are no scheduled programs, it will be open to use. Smaller groups and individuals may want to book a study room on the second floor. Keep in mind, however, these rooms must be booked in person, to a maximum of two hours per group, and they get booked up fast -- so arrive early and claim your space! Just have your library card handy, please (we'll need that to reserve your time).

If you need a computer, remember that you can reserve an hour of time before you even set foot in the branch: just give us a call (416-396-8850) and be ready to provide your library card number and preferred time. Alternately, if you have your own laptop (or iPhone, Blackberry, etc) you can always connect to our wireless internet for free.

If you need research material, and don't have the time to wait for items on hold, remember that many resources can be found through the Toronto Public Library website. You can access many of these electronic resources from home with an internet connection and a library card. If you're in the branch, be sure to drop by the Information Desk upstairs and ask a librarian for help!

It's a stressful time, and many students may find themselves in the library for a few hours at a time, so if you need a snack, you can grab something from the vending machines on the main floor, or have a drink at the water fountain.

Notice for Knitters

Cedarbrae's weekly Knitters' Drop-In will be on Tuesday January 24 this coming week instead of the usual Monday.

Additionally, looking ahead there will be no Drop-In on February 20 due to the holiday monday. The Drop-In will resume on February 27.

Volunteer Fair @ Cedarbrae

Are you interested in giving back to your community? Looking for a way to make a difference, but don't know where to start? Drop by Cedarbrae branch on Tuesday, January 17 from 4 to 6pm to learn more about volunteering opportunities. Meet new neighbours and friends, connect with community service providers and gain valuable work experience! If you're in high school, this is a chance to build your volunteer hours. Don't forget to bring your resumé with you!

Get an eReader for Christmas?

Did you know you can download books for free from the library onto your eReader device? All major brands are compatible (except Amazon’s proprietary Kindle, which is currently only functional with some libraries in the U.S.), including Kobo’s recently released Vox. To see if your device is compatible, click here.

Using your eReader to take out eBooks from the library is easy. With mobile devices such as the iPad, most smartphones, and the Vox you can even do it anywhere you have a wireless connection. However, the first time you do it you will need to set up your device properly. First, you should have a look at Overdrive, the main eBook lending service that Toronto Public Library uses for both eBooks and eAudiobooks. There is also Ebsco for eBooks and OneClick Digital for eAudiobooks. All three can be found here, or by clicking on “Downloads and eBooks” on the TPL homepage. The Downloads and eBooks page also features a handy guide called Getting Started with Library eBooks. OverDrive itself also features a great Quick Start Guide and a video Guided Tour.
