December 15, 2011 | Soheli | Comments (0)

Holiday Fun!
Looking for some last minute holiday fun? Grab the kids and head over for what we've got lined up!

Join us for stories and crafts on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve beginning at 11 AM.

After the holiday break, jumpstart the new year with our Winter Carnival for Kids on Wednesday, January 4. The fun begins at 2 PM and includes bean-bag games, juggling and more!

January 28th is Family Literacy Day, so we're combining fun and reading into an entire day full of reading activities, games, and puzzles.

No registration is needed for any of these events, so feel free to just drop in!
As always, if you have questions, leave a comment or call us at 416-396-8850.

Have a safe and happy holiday season!

Work a little SMARTer...

December 12, 2011 | Soheli | Comments (0)

For those of you who've stepped into Cedarbrae in the last year that we've (re)opened, you'll already know that we have three study rooms available on the upper level of the building for quiet study and group work. All you need is a valid library card to reserve an available room for you (or your group). Unfortunately, because of the huge demand, we can only take in-person reservations for the day of and we do limit the reservation to two hours. If it's a quiet day, however, you can stay on longer until the next reservation.

SMARTBoard
A little update, though: in the past few months, we've also got a functional SMARTBoard set up in one of the study rooms. It looks just like a traditional whiteboard stuck to the wall (but hold back the urge to write on it with markers!) It's in the largest study room which holds 8-10 people, making it ideal for group work. If you've got a laptop with you, you may want to check out the SMARTBoard's capabilities: you can practice presentations, make changes to documents collaboratively, and save copies of edited documents straight to your device. The great thing about the SMARTBoard is its touch technology - you can use 'pens' to write things directly on the screen, or simply use your finger as your tool. Made a mistake? Just make a fist and 'rub' out your error on the screen.

If you haven't used a SMARTBoard yet, and want to learn more, ask staff at the reference desk on how to get set up. You will need your own laptop with at least one USB port to connect to and run the SMARTBoard software before you can start using it. Let us know if you're interested in using this technology when you book the study room so we can help you get started right away!

Teen Homework Help Club @ Cedarbrae

December 8, 2011 | Soheli | Comments (6)

We've been hosting twice-weekly sessions of homework help for teens at Cedarbrae in partnership with University of Toronto student volunteers. This program was first geared up to be every Monday and Wednesday, but as of January 2012, we will only be offering it every Wednesday. In Get help with that stressful homework at Cedarbrae!addition, there will be no sessions for December 2011 (the first session back will be January 11th, 2012).

So, teens (and parents!) please save up any pressing homework questions for the middle of the week come January! Teen Homework Help Club starts around 4:30 PM, in the Teen Room upstairs. Tutors offer some snacks as well, so feel free to drop by, grab a granola bar, and settle in for some study help. Remember, this is a general homework help service, so not every tutor is ready to offer specialized help, but they always do their best to help guide students.

More questions? Leave me a comment!

Welcome! This blog is written by the Cedarbrae Library staff and we want it to become a place where you can find out what's going on in the branch and in the community. But not just that - we plan to write about all things we might find interesting.
