Your Money Matters: Personal Finance Programs 2017
The 2017 Personal Finance campaign kicks off in January and runs through to March with over 75 free programs in branches throughout the city (yes, we're pretty serious about helping you save your money!)
You'll see some familiar faces and some new speakers presenting on a wide range of topics from tax planning to estate planning, index investing to 'unconventional ways to save money'. Whether you:
- want to learn about managing your credit and debt
- are contemplating buying a condo vs. renovating your house
- wondering how to start that conversation with your children about setting financial goals, or
- have retired and you're not sure if you have saved enough
...we've got a program for you!
Here's a highlight of the authors and industry experts who will be presenting as part of our Personal Finance program series:
If you're single, don't worry about putting a ring on it! Gail Vaz-Oxlade returns with Victoria Ryce to share how their latest book, The CEO of Everything, maps out the territory newly singled people are thrown into to help them prepare and overcome any financial and life challenges single-handedly.

Financial literacy is an essential life skill. Ellen Roseman, personal finance and consumer affairs columnist will talk about what questions to ask when dealing with financial products and advisors, and ways to save money even when you think you're stretched thin in this financial basics presentation geared towards women.

So what will thirty or forty years, or more, in retirement look like for you? Authors Mike Drak and veteran financial columnist Jon Chevreau will help you rethink retirement and share tips from their book Victory Lap Retirement.

Award-winning writer, senior editor and real estate specialist at MoneySense magazine Romana King will discuss areas that are often over-looked related to buying or selling a home, as well as managing finances related to retirement.
Sarah Potter, author of How You Can Trade Like A Pro: Breaking into Options, Futures, Stocks and ETFs and founder of SheCanTrade.com will talk about active trading and trading in retirement.
There's an app to help you with almost any money issue, whether it’s paying down debt, organizing your loyalty cards or combing flyers for deals. To help you get technology on the side of your wallet, The Social's money expert and Financial Post writer, Melissa Leong, shares a few of her favourite money apps and digital finance tips.
Garry Duncan, author of When I Die: Financial Planning for Life and Death, discusses how to minimize taxes on death. Using simplified explanations of a rather complex area of tax, he explains what estate planning is and how to plan an effective tax strategy to enhance your estate's net worth and minimize taxes on death.

Chartered accountant Chris Clarke will talk about how she has helped families work as a team in managing their money, how to rethink what money means and will share tips from her latest book True Family Wealth (book will be available in early 2017).
Toronto Public Library has also partnered with Woodgreen Community Services to offer a variety of financial literacy presentations including income tax clinics in select east-end branches. Topics include:
