The Promise by Damon Galgut
The Promise by Damon Galgut is this year's Booker Prize winner announced in London on November 3. It is the first win for the South African playwright/novelist who had been nominated twice prior to this year. The Promise is about a white South African family who make and fail to follow through with a promise to give a house to the Black domestic servant who has worked for the family for her entire life. The judges called the book "a strong, unambiguous commentary on the history of South Africa and of humanity itself that can best be summed up in the question: does true justice exist in this world?"
