This year's Booker Prize shortlist includes two previous winners. Margaret Atwood who has been nominated for The Testaments, her much anticipated sequel to The Handmaid's Tale, won the prize in 2000 for The Blind Assassin. Salman Rushdie, a winner in 1981 for Midnight's Children has been nominated this time for Quichotte.

The Booker Prize is one of literature's most prestigious awards. The author of the winning book receives £50,000 and all the writers nominated see increases in recognition and book sales. Previously open only to writers from Commonwealth countries, Ireland, South Africa and Zimbabwe, in 1994 the award expanded to include any English language novel providing it was published in the United Kingdom or Ireland between October 1 of the previous year and September 30 of the award year.
