Cat-Themed Mysteries for International Cat Day 2019
August 8 is International Cat Day but if you ask your cat, they will tell you that every day is Cat Day.
Cats are wonderful companions and there's scientific evidence that living with a cat can improve health. Stroking a cat can reduce stress and lower blood pressure. Just listening to a cat purr may stimulate healing for humans and cats. Sometimes I listen to cat purring noise generators online when I'm having a stressful day at work.
Besides keeping your feet warm and helping reduce stress, some fictional cats also solve crimes. Is there anything cats can't do?
These are a few of the very many book series about crime solving cats. Ask for other suggestions at you local branch.
Bookmobile Cat Mysteries by Laurie Cass
Minnie Hamilton drives the library bookmobile around a Michigan resort town accompanied by her loyal cat Eddie. Eddie has a knack for finding corpses so Minnie frequently finds herself solving crimes in addition to her regular librarian duties.
Cat Cafe Mysteries by Cate Conte
Maddie James is visiting family on Daybreak Island, Massachusetts when she is adopted by a stray cat. She and the cat become inseparable, even discovering dead bodies together. In the second book in the series, Maddie opens a cat cafe on the island.
Cat in the Stacks Mysteries by Miranda James
Widowed librarian Charlie Harris and his Maine Coon cat Diesel solve murders in a Mississippi college town. These books sound like great reads for library staff. In Twelve Angry Librarians, one of Charlie's classmates/enemies from library school is murdered and Charlie is the prime suspect. It's true – one of my main takeaways from library school (yes, we really call it "library school") is permanent animosity towards some of my fellow students.
Cat Rescue Series by T.C. LoTempio
After breaking up with her fiancé, Sydney McCall returns to her hometown Deer Park, North Carolina to help her sister run the local animal shelter. Murder soon follows. Sydney and her cat Toby seem to encounter murder everywhere.
