The Scotiabank Giller Prize was presented to Esi Edugyan for her novel Washington Black at a gala on November 19, 2018. The novel tells the story of a boy born into slavery on a Barbados plantation and follows his escape from slavery and his subsequent adventures. In her acceptance speech Edugyan said "I just have to say that in a climate in which so many forms of truth telling are under siege, this feels like a wonderful and important celebration of words". This is the second Giller win for Edugyan whose Half-Blood Blues was awarded the prize in 2011.
