After a sex scandal prompted The Swedish Academy to postpone this year's Nobel Prize for Literature, a group of Swedish intellectuals formed an organization called The New Academy. The organization announced its intention to present an international literary prize in 2018 "as a reminder that literature should be associated with democracy, openness, empathy and respect".

Forty-seven authors nominated by Swedish librarians, comprise the longlist for the prize and anyone may vote between July 10-August 14. The 3 authors with the most votes and an additional author selected from the librarians' nominations will be the finalists. An expert panel will select the winner from this group.

Three Canadians authors, Margaret Atwood, Anne Carson and Kim Thúy, are on the longlist.

The winner will be announced on October 14. The prize will be presented at a gala on December 10. The New Academy will be dissolved on December 11.
