Canada's biggest fair has opened its gates! Make the most of the summer home stretch during these 18 days of excitement, entertainment and extravagant eats. Before you hop on a streetcar destined for Exhibition Place, take a look at the schedule and see if there are any special events you want to attend. Another approach is to wander the fairgrounds open to all the wonders and curiosities the CNE has to offer, from aerial acrobatics to superdogs to walking trees! Catch a show from a lively lineup of different Canadian performers such as Elvis Stojko, the Inuksuk Drum Dancers and Splash'N Boots. Go for a spin on the Tilt-A-Whirl (it's the 90th anniversary of its world debut!). Feed your brain at the International Festival of Authors featuring Toronto writers Vincent Lam and Ann Y.K. Choi. Hang out with astronomers and view the solar eclipse together on Monday!

Crazy carnival foods are one of the main attractions of the Ex. If you're craving something deep-fried, cheese-stuffed or doused in sugar — or a combination of all three — you've come to the right place. New on the menu this year for those with adventurous appetites: ice cream dipped in liquid nitrogen, pancake bacon tacos, unicorn popcorn and more!

Here are some cookbooks for fun eats you can try making at home. Who knows, maybe your favourite recipe will have fairgoers lining up at the CNE next summer!

You may find yourself in a melancholy mood once the Ex is over, so celebrate its history with other fair fans! Author Lee Shimano will be presenting her book Treasures of the CNE: Memorabilia and Tales from the Canadian National Exhibition at Alderwood Branch on September 18.
