Beach Reads
Warm weather is finally upon us and reading outside in the sun on the beach is summer tradition... or on a patio, or in a backyard, whatever you enjoy. Beach-read booklists are very popular, since many of us love to read while at the beach. This is when we give ourselves permission to read maybe lighter, sexy, trashy books that otherwise we wouldn't want others to see us reading in public. But the summer has different rules, no need for hard English lit classics – bring out James Patterson, Jenny Han, Emily Giffin, George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones before the series comes back on TV July 16, 2017. Here are some authors who fit in perfect with the beach.
Elin Hiderbrand is an author who has focused most of her 21 books on Nantucket in summer, the exception being her Winter Trilogy. Her books focus on real-life issues such as marriage troubles, problems with family and children, perhaps embarking on an affair. These stories serve as a great form of escapism that many readers enjoy.
John Grisham has currently authored 30 books, his newest being Camino Island. His books are great for summer reads as they are fast-paced, riveting and we can pretend how we would run the case if we were the lawyers in the story. You can explore the worlds of corruption, small town-life, or if you read his Theodore Boone series, about a 13-year-old kid who dreams of being a lawyer and what he uncovers in his young life.
Comedy Writers
Summer is a great time to read books that will make you laugh out loud. This year, we have a great selection of new very funny books from Trevor Noah, David Sedaris, Ben Falcone and Bunmi Laditan.
This queen of the romance novel has been writing since the early 1970s and has been publishing at least one new book a year for most of her career. Her over-the-top characters deal with divorce, incest and infidelity and her heroines must overcome one obstacle or another to find happiness.
Graphic Novels
Summer is great time to check out why comics are growing in popularity in the mainstream. Wonder Woman is great series to explore. The Dark Tower by Stephen King is coming out in August on the big screen. Brian K. Vaughan has a great series out called Saga that is onto its seventh volume. Sarah Andersen has published two collections of her comics and they are laugh-out-loud funny.
