In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play)

Performance dates:  April 17 – May 2, 2020


 Summary: In late 19th century America, an enterprising young physician takes advantage of the dawn of electricity to employ a new mechanism to ease female “hysteria”.  Meanwhile, his devoted but desperately unhappy wife takes charge of her own fulfillment and awakening.  This daring play explores the subjugated world of an upper middle class wife and mother with humour, compassion and enlightenment.
 
A copy of the play will be on reserve at the Information Desk, 5th Floor, Toronto Reference Library.

  • Auditions are on January 25, 27 & 28,  2020
  • Callbacks are January 30, 2020
  • The play runs April 17 – May 2, 2020 on the Mainstage at Alumnae

The Roles:   
       
Alumnae Theatre Company is committed to non-traditional casting and to including talented actors of all races, backgrounds, and ages in our productions.
 
Catherine Givings    
 
Wife of Dr. Givings and mother to Letitia, a woman late 20’s/early 30’s and full of life, but sexually frustrated with her marriage.

Dr. Givings  
              
Catherine's husband, a man in his forties and a specialist in gynecological and hysterical disorders.

Sabrina Daldry
         
Dr. Givings' patient, a pianist in her early thirties struggling with hysteria and infertility.

Leo Irving   
               
Another patient of Dr. Givings', an English artist in his twenties or thirties.

Annie   
                      
Dr. Givings' midwife assistant, a woman in her late thirties.

Elizabeth
                   
​A housekeeper, and later wet nurse, a Black woman in her early thirties.

Dick Daldry 
              
Sabrina Daldry's husband, a man in his forties or fifties.

 
Please note that this play deals with sexuality and actors must be comfortable with depicting intimacy (with the support of an intimacy director). Alumnae Theatre members are given preference of casting.

Alumnae Theatre, 70 Berkeley Street, Toronto, ON (SW corner of Berkeley and Adelaide Street East) Entry by Stage Door on n Adelaide.
 
Saturday, January 25, 2020                 
10 am – 6 pm

Monday, January 27, 2020

Callbacks: Thursday, January 30, 2020  6-9 pm

 
Audition Preparation:      
 
 
Please prepare a short (2-3 min.) contemporary monologue. 
​It is highly recommended that you are familiar with the play and the characters.
