Casting call for general auditions, Mixed Company Theatre

**These auditions are for PAID opportunities for NON-UNION performers.**

MIXED COMPANY THEATRE has been producing innovative, socially-relevant
theatre as a tool for positive change since 1983. Today, Mixed Company Theatre is
known for their commitment to inspiring communities and schools across Canada to
create social change through Forum Theatre.

We are hosting GENERAL AUDITIONS this year because we are actively looking to cast
for multiple upcoming touring projects. Experience in Forum Theatre or Theatre of
the Oppressed is appreciated but NOT REQUIRED.

Actors are asked to prepare 1 dramatic and 1 comedic contemporary monologue and
have the option of presenting a song (to be sung acapella). Actors should be ready for
redirection and to discuss their upcoming availability.

***We STRONGLY encourage submissions from performers of colour, Indigenous
performers, queer/ trans/ non-binary/ gender fluid performers, performers with
disabilities or who are differently-abled, mad performers, performers of all sizes and
capabilities, and new generation/ emerging performers.

The auditions will be held in the Ladies’ Parlour room in Saint Luke’s United Church
(157 Carlton Street, Toronto). Applications are due Monday November 26th, 2018 at
5:00 PM. 

***A selection of Canadian Monologues are set aside for reading at the Information Desk of the Arts Dept., 5th floor Toronto Reference Library.

AUDITIONS will be held at the Village Playhouse, 2190E Bloor St. West (around the corner from Runnymede subway station) at the following dates and times:
Friday, Dec 7: 7pm to 10pm
Saturday, Dec 8: Noon to 5:00 pm
Callbacks (if necessary): Tuesday, Dec 11: from 6:30 pm

A copy of the play is on hold for reading at the Arts Dept. information desk on the 5th floor of the Toronto Reference Library.

REHEARSALS: Will be held at the Village Playhouse. First read: Saturday Dec 15 at 11 am – 2 pm. (We will start full rehearsals in early January) Rehearsals will be Tuesdays and Thursdays 7-10 pm, and Sundays 1 – 5 pm. And every night of tech week beginning Sunday, FEBRUARY 24 (full day on the 24thth).

PLAY SYNOPSIS: One year after the suicide of their son, Debora and Michael Shaun-Hastings sit down to dinner with their son’s bully and his parents. Blame shifts over the course of the evening as everyone takes a turn in the hot seat for their real or imagined part in Joel’s suicide, and questions are raised that no one is prepared to answer.

CHARACTERS (ages given are character ages, not actor’s ages)
Michael Shaun-Hastings: early 50s successful conservative politician; used to power and sure of his views
Deborah Shaun-Hastings: early 50s sophisticated “ gracious “ upper - middle-class matron who sees herself as primarily as an” artist” ( sculptors)
Tamara Dermot: late 40s a working class woman who sees “ mom” as her primary role
Bill Dermot: late 40s a “ hockey “ dad who is very traditional regarding values and family roles
Curtis Dermot: 17 a somewhat sulky high school student.. very much a cliché “ ordinary” guy

PREPARATION: Please prepare a 2-minute dramatic monologue. You may be asked to do cold readings from the script; please read the whole play before the audition. A script is available upon request from the audition coordinator and may be available at the Toronto Reference Library.
