The Play – Setting is a lovely farmhouse in Buck’s County, Pennsylvania

It is a rip roaring absurd comedy about regret and growing older in the modern age. It is also about relationships and what happens to them when the disrupters appear and choices need to be made. Vanya and Sonia live in the family home having stayed to nurse aging parents who have since died. We are not sure how many years have passed since then but brother and sister have established routines of quiet desperation and regret with morning coffee, thrown mugs and waiting to see the blue heron by the pond. Into the morning arrives the other sister, Masha with her Spike disrupting everything with invitations to costume parties, kissing passionately while flaunting success, narcissism and sex. Then the lovely young Nina arrives whose mere presence threatens Masha reminding her that she is not 41. And always, Cassandra with her predictions and pronouncements warning of Hootie Pie, the house being sold and Trojans in back pockets adds to the absurd hilarious action.

Over the two days, each character makes a choice that will change their lives and confound their expectations.

As Casandra’s advises, “Beware of thinking too much.”

Characters: 2 males, 4 females

** Ages listed are a guide for how the character should appear onstage, not necessarily the age of the actor.

Vanya: 50’s He states that he is 57 and gets caught in the middle between his two sisters trying to keep the peace though he can push their buttons when he is directly, indirect. He is a dear, sweet lost soul not sure of what he would be doing if he was not living here. Vanya is struggling with the rapid changes wrought by technology, the modern age, climate change so he longs for the shared experience of everyone watching Ed Sullivan. The actor playing Vanya will know that he must go on for pages.

Sonia: early 50’s Vanya’s adopted sister living with him in Buck’s County – she is discontented, upset, regretful but also a wild turkey, Maggie Smith in California Suite, resents Masha’s life and has longed for Vanya even though it is now just a habit. She makes some very important choices as a result of choosing the party and her own costume. The actor playing Sonia will need to find her voice as Maggie Smith in California Suite.

Masha: in her 50’s though she says she is 41… a glamourous and successful actress who travels the world. Masha is famous but regrets not being a classical actress and her 5 failed marriages. She does not want to face growing older as the parts are changing from sexy killer to grandmother so she holds onto Spike for dear life. She needs to be the centre of attention and Snow White. The actor playing Masha must be comfortable kissing Spike – passionately.

Spike: 29 or younger – sexy, self-absorbed. Oh, handsome Spike who takes his clothes off and puts them on and was almost cast in Entourage 2. He tries to do the right thing by making sure Masha has a nice weekend. He has likely watched all 5 Sexy Killer movies. He does not hide his feelings; he’s not deep. A wonderful fun character. The actor playing Spike will need to be comfortable in just his underwear and kissing Masha - passionately.

Nina: early 20’s – lovely, sincere would-be actress visiting her aunt and uncle next door. She is star struck and energetic – Nina is possibilities – young but loves foreign films, the Beatles, acting and working at it. She is open but not totally naïve as she can see through Spike while appreciating receiving the contact information about his agent. She can look adorable in a Dopey costume. The actor playing Nina will need to be open and lovely without being sickly sweet.

Cassandra: the cleaning lady and soothsayer, any age – She is wonderful, the archetype of all times – the maid as in Chekhov, Coward, Shakespeare’s fool and Greek Chorus. Though she will not simply say, “Good Morning” she does care about Vanya and Sonia and finally Masha. The actor playing Cassandra will need to play some opposites- solid but open to play and mischief.

Requirements: Please prepare a short monologue – less than 90 seconds – something you love and something comedic would be ideal. You may be re-directed. You will be asked to do a cold reading from the play. Please read the play.

Rehearsals will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 7:30 - 10:30 p.m. and Sundays, 1:00 – 5 p.m. First read-through will be Tuesday, December 12 at 7:30 p.m. with rehearsals beginning Sunday, December 17 at 1:00 p.m.
There will be rehearsals December 19, 21 and 28 and back in full on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 Additional rehearsals may be added as we move closer to the production opening.

All performances are at Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Road (at Markham Road).

This production will be adjudicated for the 2017-2018 Act-Co Festival.

SYNOPSIS
Three Jewish widows meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husbands' graves. lda is sweet
tempered and ready to begin a new life. Lucille is a feisty embodiment of the girl who just wants to have fun.
Doris is priggish and judgmental, particularly when Sam the butcher enters the scene. Doris and Lucille
squash the budding romance between Sam and lda but are guilt stricken when this nearly breaks lda's heart.
This is a heart-warming tale of true friendship and the constant struggle for love.

REQUIREMENTS
Please prepare a two-minute monologue- Cold readings from the script will also be required. lf called back, you will
be asked to read from the script with other actors. Please bring a resume and recent head-shot.
We need strong actors with a great sense of comedic timing. Think Jewish "Golden Girls"

All characters below are mid 50's to mid 60's, (perhaps up to 70 for Sam)
Role Description

lda Ida is ihe gentlest and most charming of the three widowed friends and
the one who faces life most realistically. She is ready to move on past
orief and to acceot new challenoes.

Lucille Lucille is the most brazen one, always looking for a good deal, a good
time and always looking to "get even" with her unfaithful husband.

Doris Doris is the most conservative of the three and the one who refuses to
change any element in her life. She adheres to her strict principles of
love and resoect and exoects her friends to do the same.

Sam Sam is the local butcher and still moums the death of his wife. He
realizes that life has much to offer and is willing to take a chance on
haopiness aqain.

Mildred Mildred is a show-off and a flirt. A smaller role but with a BIG personality.

ABOUT THE PLAY:
Widely thought of as Shakespeare’s bloodiest tragedy, Titus Andronicus takes us down into the depths of humanity’s most vile traits and revels in the horrors contained therein. It tells the story of a Roman general, returned from a terrible war, who becomes embroiled in a circle of bloody revenge with his enemies. Titus Andronicus teaches us the fruitless nature of revenge and the hollow satisfaction of twisted justice.
WARNING: Extreme violence, sexual violence, disturbing scenes.

Denise Norman is a Toronto Actor/Singer, and a member of CAEA and ACTRA, who performs in a wide array of theatre including Shakespeare, Operetta, and Clown.

An MFA and MA graduate of York University, she has taught Acting and Voice and Text for 26 years.  She regularly teaches full time Acting students at U of T Mississauga Drama Studies Program; The Randolph Academy; and Sheridan College Music Theatre. Denise has also taught at York University; Seneca College and McMaster University, as well as frequently leading workshops, coaching and play development.

Over four sessions the course will build upon the exercises from the previous sessions, therefore attendance for all four of the sessions is expected.  Comfortable clothing is recommended.

Week 1 will consist of introductory exercises; group work; warm up and social/character interactions; short scene interactions

Weeks 2 to 4 will be built upon the group ability and experience as discovered in the first session

SYNOPSIS

ln preparation for a dysfunctional family reunion and wanting to make his life seem more successful than it is, Joe
Todd hires Renee, an escort, to act as his fiancee for an upcoming visit by his father, stepmother and sister. Joe
and his sister Carrie are suspicious of their father's motives for the get-together. When the whole family shows up,
sure enough, sensitive issues are aired, emotions flare and Renee ends up as a kind of referee. Funny, but serious
and deeply moving as well.

REQUIREMENTS
A one-to-two minute monologue with is recommended. lf you do not have a monologue, selected cold readings will
be provided at the audition. The audition may also involve a short interview with the Director. lf called back, you will
be asked to read from the script with other actors.

DRINKING ALONE  

Joe Todd  Mid-30's, single. Lives on his own with not much of a social life. Hides in a life of
anonymity to avoid thinking about who he has become vs who he had wanted to be when he was
young. Runs the Dry-Cleaning business his father started.
Renee Duchene Mid-30's A hair stylist. Single mom with a young daughter. Does some work
as a leqitimate escort. Tries to project toughness but is not very good at it and is emotionally
vulnerable in her own way.
Carrie O'Neill - 29. A television newscaster. Career oriented, but not as tough as she likes to
portray herself. Carries around a lot of unresolved bitterness that can mask her true personality.
lvan Todd - 60's, Joe and Carrie's father. Demanding of, and it seems, always disappointed in,
his children. Up to this point, has been emotionally absent from much of his children's lives.
Owns a book store.
Phyllis 50's lvan's second wife, Joe and Carrie's stepmother. A good person at heart.
She does not enjoy a warm relationship with Joe and Carrie due to family history.

New Ideas Festival 2018: CALL FOR DIRECTORS

Alumnae Theatre Company invites non-union directors to apply to direct one of the 15 plays (running time 10 to 40 minutes) for New Ideas Festival (NIF) 2018, our 30th annual three-week juried festival of new plays, works-in-progress, and experimental theatre to be held from March 8 to 26, 2018.

If you are interested in directing a play in the New Ideas Festival, email newideasfestival@gmail.com by Oct 6, 2017. Please make the subject line “Director Application (your name)” and provide a directing CV or paragraph description of your experience (not required for returning directors). You will receive further details once you have submitted your application. As our industry has far fewer female directors, women directors are especially encouraged to apply.

Fri., Oct. 6, 2017: Deadline to apply to direct one of the New Ideas Festival plays (We encourage returning directors and Alumnae members to apply by Sept. 30.)
