I'm a bit of a luddite and just got a personal phone. After lurking on Instagram I just joined and then kind of froze. After several weeks and a few posts I have two followers (thanks Mom and random Internet stranger) so I decided to do what every good librarian does... I borrowed some books from my local library to figure this thing out.

Instagram for Dummies

Instagram For Dummies

"Instagram is the fastest-growing social network in the world, soaring from 500 million to 1 billion active users in just two years. Users flock to the site thanks to its simplicity and use of the most popular social media features--image and video sharing, community, and personal insight. Instagram For Dummies is here if you're ready to get acquainted with the platform or want to find ways to do more with your Instagram account. Written by an team led by top Instagram trainer Jenn Herman, this book gives you tips for creating great Instagram images, personalizing your posts, connecting with the Instagram community, and working with Stories and IGTV."

Hashtag Authentic Finding Creativity and Building a Community on Instagram and Beyond

Hashtag Authentic: Finding Creativity and Building a Community on Instagram and Beyond

"Instagram is the fastest growing of all social media platforms, with 400 million monthly active users worldwide half of whom are under the age of twenty-five. While some use the app as a personal networking tool, many also use it to build their creative business endeavours;whether in food and drink or fashion and lifestyle. Sara Tasker has done just that, and since setting up her account whilst on maternity leave in 2013, has become an Instagram coach, iPhoneographer and social media influencer. Her chronicle of authentic everyday life and her mindful Me and Orla blog has developed into a business in which she provides access to free insta-tips, alongside some hugely popular paid for e-courses for independent creatives. Hashtag Authentic draws on the lessons Sara has learned over the past five years."

No Filter: The Inside Story of Instagram

"In 2010, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger released a photo-sharing app called Instagram, with one simple but irresistible feature: it would make anything you captured through your phone look more beautiful. The cofounders started to cultivate a community of photographers and artisans around the app, but it quickly went mainstream. In less than two years, it caught Facebook's attention: Mark Zuckerberg bought the company for a historic $1 billion when Instagram was just 13 employees ....  No Filter examines how Instagram's dominance acts as lens into our society today, highlighting our fraught relationship with technology, our desire for perfection, and the battle within tech for its most valuable commodity: our attention."

Instafame: Graffiti and Street Art in the Instagram Era

"Instafame charts the impact of Instagram - one of the world's most popular social media platforms - on visual culture in the mere eight years since its launch. MacDowell traces the intuitive connections between graffiti, street art, and Instagram, arguing that social media's unending battle for a viewer's attention is closely aligned with eye-catching ethos of unsanctioned public art. Beginning with the observation that the scroll of images on a sideways phone screen resembles nothing so much as graffiti seen through the windows of a moving train, Macdowell moves outward to give us a wide-ranging look at how Instagram has already effected a dramatic shift in the making and viewing of street art."

Lastly there's a program you might enjoy happening at the Toronto Reference Library March 12, 2020; come hear Professor Kate Eichhorn discuss her new book, The End of Forgetting, where she discusses how the rise of digital technologies could make it impossible to grow up.

The End of Forgetting: Growing Up with Social Media

"Thanks to Facebook and Instagram, our younger selves have been captured and preserved online. But what happens, Kate Eichhorn asks, when we can't leave our most embarrassing moments behind? Rather than a childhood cut short by a loss of innocence, the real crisis of the digital age may be the specter of a childhood that can never be forgotten."
