Librarian for a month: Sanjai’s experience as a student intern at Albert Campbell branch

Albert Campbell branch was pleased to offer a practicum placement opportunity for a University of Toronto graduate student with the Faculty of Information (iSchool).

Sanjai Kanesamoorthy who is completing his last year in the Library and Information Science stream of the graduate program worked at Albert Campbell branch for the past month.

This is Sanjai’s account of his experience interning at the branch.

“The main project for this practicum was to work on the Weaving Memoirs on the Web program which is an intergenerational program that pairs youth volunteers and local seniors to create an online memoir blog. I really liked that the program was structured to get youth to work with seniors, connecting the two generations over the technological medium. While interning at the branch I saw firsthand how important computer training is to seniors by helping to facilitate the computer training classes ‘Move that Mouse’ and ‘Web Basics 1 & 2.’ During these classes I witnessed Tony, a participant in the class, go from the basic course which focused on learning to use the computer mouse, to being able to use the computer to place holds on items from the Toronto Public Library’s website, as well as learning to use Google maps to plan for an upcoming trip to Hamilton.

The practicum opportunity provided jointly by the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information (iSchool) and the Albert Campbell District Library was an enjoyable and unique experience. The staff at Albert Campbell library have been wonderful, and the professional experience I gained from the practicum was above and beyond what was promised by the program. Throughout the internship I worked on the circulation desk, the reference desk, and got to assist with community programming and outreach. This experience will be very valuable for the future careers I pursue. Thank you, Sara Tavakolian, for overseeing the position and the rest of the staff for welcoming me with open arms into your schedules and daily tasks.”

It was a pleasure working with Sanjai. His enthusiasm and positive attitude towards every task he took on made the placement a wonderful experience that we hope to be able to offer again at the branch!
