For the Love of RPGs
What is it that comes to your mind when someone mentions tabletop role-playing games (RPGs)? Most people probably think of Dungeons & Dragons (D & D). There are several references to D & D in recent popular culture, including the campaigns played by the gang of friends from television's popular "The Big Bang Theory", and the Netflix series "Stranger Things".
It is a little-known fact that the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy is home to the world's largest collection of tabletop role-playing games.
There are over 1,800 individual items in the RPG collection! Approximately one-third of the collection is devoted to the ever popular Dungeons & Dragons, including Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (1st and 2nd editions), Dungeons & Dragons (1st to 5th editions), and several campaigns inside the D & D world, including Forgotten Realms.
There are also numerous titles outside of the D & D world in the collection, including Aliens, Ars Magica, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Call of Cthulhu, Exalted, Game of Thrones, Mage, Rifts, Shadowrun, Star Trek, Warhammer and many, many more.
Part of the continual allure of tabletop RPGs is that they are low-tech, highly social and fun! Have you ever wanted to play? Maybe you are just curious to know how it all works, or want to start your own group but don't know where to begin? Please join us on Saturday, January 27th, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm in the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy where three experienced Dungeon Masters will introduce you to the basics of game play, and run short campaigns. No experience is necessary! Please sign up online at the Friends of Merril Facebook page, or please call the department for more information.
