Darcy Prentiss, the girl least likely to be entered into the Bay Festival Princess contest, is nominated for just that among other things in this contemporary teen novel by author Gillian French. It is summer and all Darcy is concerned with is picking berries to make some money to get out of her rural Maine town. She is also tangled up in boys, swimming in the barrens and parties in the flatbeds of pickup trucks.
Not everything is fun and games though. Darcy and her cousin Nell have a terrible secret and that coupled with the disappearance of her ex-friend along with the drama of small town living, she’s preoccupied to say the least. This is a story about the bonds of family, of women and of what they will do to protect those they love. It is an endearing read with a few plot twists here and there that will keep you guessing.
