Who is allowed to borrow a book?

To sign out a book, you must have a valid adult or teen Toronto Public Library card. Need a library card?

Can I place a hold on a book in advance?

Yes. To place a hold on a “human book”, email whatson@torontopubliclibrary.ca at anytime or drop into Parkdale Branch starting Saturday, April 12. You must provide a valid adult or teen Toronto Public Library card number and your phone number. In an effort to make the books available to as many people as possible, please show up within ten minutes of your reservation. Otherwise, after the ten minute grace period, we will free up your reservation for other customers in line.

How many books can I place a hold on?

You can place a hold on one book in advance, but you are welcome to borrow other books on the program date (Saturday, April 12 at Parkdale branch from 2:00-4:30pm). Please present your library card on the program date to sign out your reserved book.

How do I sign out a book?

How long can I sign out a book for?

Borrowers can sign out a book for a maximum of 30 minutes per session. Please note that the borrower or the book can end the session at any time at their discretion.

What happens if my book does not show up on the program date?

In the event that a book cancels or does not show up on the day of, Toronto Public Library will make every effort possible to find a replacement, although this is not guaranteed.

Can I sign up for sign language interpretation?

Toronto Public Library offers sign language interpretation upon advanced request for library programs and events. Please request this with the respective Human Library branch or call 416-393-7100 (TTY only).

Can I photograph/record my session?

Participants are not allowed to photograph or record the session. Please note that members of the media may be present and request to photograph, record, and/or interview you. It is up to your discretion if you'd like to participate.
