TPL Board Elects New Chair and Vice Chair
At its Jan 29 meeting, the Toronto Public Library (TPL) Board elected Sue Graham-Nutter as the Board's new chair, and Strahan McCarten as the new vice chair. Both Ms. Graham-Nutter and Mr. McCarten have been board members since February 2015.
Ms. Graham-Nutter’s interest in the library stems from the support she received at Morningside branch during her school years. While a student at the University of Toronto, Ms. Graham-Nutter played a key role on student council in realizing the dream of building the Vincent Bladen Library.
Ms. Graham-Nutter is the CEO of the Rekai Centres, which own and operate two long-term care homes in downtown Toronto, with plans to build a third home on the Waterfront. She has extensive professional experience gained over 25 years in the public and private sectors, with a particular focus on public affairs, marketing and real estate.
A recent graduate from Harvard University’s Graduate Certificate in Real Estate Financing, Ms. Graham-Nutter also has an Honours BA in Public Administration from the University of Toronto and a diploma in Fundraising from Humber College. In addition to her role as chair of the TPL Board, Ms. Graham-Nutter is a member of the Business Board at the University of Toronto and previously chaired the Campus Affairs Committee at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus.
We asked Ms. Graham-Nutter what she most values about TPL:
My favourite thing about TPL is the extensive book collection. Even in this digital age, I find it relaxing to curl up with a good book! As chair, I have a particular interest in the WiFi hotspots and the expanding digital collections. The Morningside branch was a game changer for my life. Today, the WiFi hotspots and the digital collections can literally transform lives, particularly for newcomers and young people.
I welcome the opportunity to meet people in our 100 library branches!
Strahan McCarten is a member of TPL’s Innovation Council, an advisory group of recognized leading individuals from the academic, creative and technology communities.
Mr. McCarten has over 15 years of experience in IT and strategy consulting. He is currently Senior Vice President of Product & Strategy for eStruxture Data Centers. He previously worked at Scalar Decisions, a national IT integrator; Bell Canada; and Mercer Consulting, a global strategy consulting firm. Mr. McCarten is a recognized cloud and cyber security expert who frequently writes and speaks on trends in the industry.
He has a BBA from Wilfrid Laurier University and an MBA from the Rotman School of Management.
We asked Mr. McCarten what he most values about TPL:
My favourite thing about TPL is the sheer diversity of services it provides, particularly those aimed at vulnerable or at-risk groups. Whether it's Adult Literacy services, support for new Canadians, the bookmobiles, or the WiFi hotspot lending program, staff at the library continually demonstrate both how committed they are to building communities across Toronto, and how the library is so much more than amazing books.
I'm most looking forward to getting to know the new members of the Board (two new members will join in the coming months) and to understand how they can help promote the interests of the library within their communities.
