Hello! হ্যালো! Did you know that there are eight branches that have Bengali materials at the Toronto Public Library? With thousands of books, CDs, DVDs and magazines to choose from, make the Toronto Public Library the first place you visit if you want to read or learn Bengali. Welcome to Bengali at your library!

SamiyaI got the chance to chat with our Bengali language selector, Samiya Syeda, to ask her more about the process of selecting Bengali books for the Toronto Public Library.

Suzanne: Can you tell me about how you choose Bengali books for the library?

Samiya: I pick fiction, nonfiction and childrens books. I look at famous authors and titles, and look up the latest titles that are out and order them through the library’s various vendors that offer titles in Bengali. Things I consider are the publisher, year, price, if our database already has it, and how it circulates.

Suzanne: Wow! What else can you tell me about the collections?

Samiya: Cedarbrae and Dawes Road have the largest collections of Bengali materials. Some locations have sent their Bengali children's collections to a branch that has more use for it. So check with your local branch!

Suzanne: What are some popular authors or titles?

Humayan AhmedSamiya: Humayun Ahmed is a very popular Bangladeshi author, and people are always looking for his books. Actually, last year it was very hard to find his books, so I had to make a special request to numerous vendors as people were demanding his books! They created a special list of his titles for me so I can order them the next time I place an order.

Suzanne: Wow, there is so much to do and consider when choosing Bengali materials for the library. Thank you, Samiya!

Pssst! If you would like to read Humayun Ahmed's books, here’s a list of his titles available at the Toronto Public Library!
