December's Recommended Recordings - The Misha Bower Edition

December 10, 2012 | TPL Local Music | Comments (0) Facebook Twitter More...

We here at Make Some Noise are pretty excited for Misha Bower's upcoming reading and performance at the Lillian H. Smith library this Friday (December 14th). Misha's an incredibly talented singer who performed with her band Bruce Peninsula at a Make Some Noise concert way back in 2009. Before you come to hear Misha this Friday at the Lillian H. Smith Library, (which we highly recommend you do), check out some recordings her voice has graced recently.

Bruce Peninsula A Mountain is a MouthBruce Peninsula
A Mountain is a Mouth (2008)
Open Flames (2011)

It's hard to describe Bruce Peninsula, one of Misha Bower's main musical concerns. Songs that start out feeling like footstomping roots-rock quickly morph into rich choral soul or blues or Bruce Peninsula Open Flamesstraight up headbangers, sometimes over the course of a few minutes. Their perpetual genre-shifting performances coupled with their sheer energy make BP a perpetual fan favourite in Toronto (and one of the best bands to see live if you ever get a chance).

Denise BensonOn November 7th, the amazing Denise Benson stopped by the Bloor/Gladstone branch to talk about her GridTO series "Then and Now", chronicling the history of Toronto's nightclub scene. Those in the packed audience were treated to an overview of Toronto dance and live music venues from the 70s to present, detailing the significance of clubs like The Edge, Nuts & Bolts and Komrads both to musicians as well as the LGBTQ and many other communities as supports and gathering places.

For those of you weren't able to make it to the event, check out Denise's interview with CBC Metro Morning's Matt Galloway, delivered earlier in the day (skip to about 2/3rds of the through if you want to miss the earlier story about the American elections).

Hooded-Fang-Tosta-Mista-Album-Cover-1-914x1024Looking for fun local music-themed stuff to do for the next few weeks? Well, look no further! The Make Some Noise program has a pair of exciting events to tell you about.

This Saturday, stop by the Sanderson Library to rock out with acclaimed indie artists, Hooded Fang. As with all of our concerts, this one is free and all-ages.

By coincidence, on the same day, Scadding Court Community Centre’s Live Local Market is hosting a Harvest Festival to celebrate food grown and produced in and around Toronto. This day-long event will feature local food and fun activities for people of all ages. It’s a way to celebrate the harvest and to get people thinking about World Food Day coming up on October 16, 2011 – a day that highlights the issues behind poverty and hunger across the globe. (+ There's going to be a BOUNCY CASTLE! Yesssssss).

Mighty_uke_posterThen, next Saturday, the High Park Branch will be hosting a screening and workshop with the  creators of acclaimed Canadian documentary Mighty Uke. Watch the film, and then catch a couple of pointers on playing this wicked tiny instrument.
