December's Recommended Recordings - The Misha Bower Edition

December 10, 2012 | TPL Local Music | Comments (0) Facebook Twitter More...

We here at Make Some Noise are pretty excited for Misha Bower's upcoming reading and performance at the Lillian H. Smith library this Friday (December 14th). Misha's an incredibly talented singer who performed with her band Bruce Peninsula at a Make Some Noise concert way back in 2009. Before you come to hear Misha this Friday at the Lillian H. Smith Library, (which we highly recommend you do), check out some recordings her voice has graced recently.

Bruce Peninsula A Mountain is a MouthBruce Peninsula
A Mountain is a Mouth (2008)
Open Flames (2011)

It's hard to describe Bruce Peninsula, one of Misha Bower's main musical concerns. Songs that start out feeling like footstomping roots-rock quickly morph into rich choral soul or blues or Bruce Peninsula Open Flamesstraight up headbangers, sometimes over the course of a few minutes. Their perpetual genre-shifting performances coupled with their sheer energy make BP a perpetual fan favourite in Toronto (and one of the best bands to see live if you ever get a chance).

November's Recommended Recordings - The Kontravoid Edition

November 6, 2012 | TPL Local Music | Comments (0) Facebook Twitter More...

KontravoidOn November 9, electronic musician Cameron Findlay will be stopping by the Bloor/Gladstone library for a free all-ages performance. Cam's current musical incarnation as the dark and brooding techno composer Kontravoid is by no means his sole stage persona though, and many music fans have likely encountered him gracing the stage with one of a wide range of Toronto's most impressive artists. Here are recordings by just a few of Cameron's collaborators.

Crystal Castles IICrystal Castles
Crystal Castles [II] (2010)

Enfants terribles of the Toronto scene, Crystal Castles' Alice Glass and Ethan Kath are notorious for their fast-paced aggressive tracks and wild live performances. Findlay performed with Crystal Castles as their stage drummer in 2007-08, and has joined them as an opening act on their current North American Tour.

Come Hear the Yorkville Sound

October 12, 2011 | TPL Local Music | Comments (0) Facebook Twitter More...

Yorkville

During the 1960s, Yorkville flourished as the hub of Canada’s bohemian scene, Toronto’s equivalent of New York’s Greenwich Village or San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district. A haven for artists, students and other counterculture types, it was a time when Canadian songwriting blossomed and the careers of many local musicians were launched. If you entered one of its many clubs and coffee houses you might have heard the music of future folk and rock stars like Ian & Sylvia, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Gordon Lightfoot, or lesser-known artists like Kensington Market, David Wiffen and Bonnie Dobson.

On Friday, October 21st, the Toronto Reference Library will host a concert reliving Yorkville’s magical music scene of the ‘60s. Come out and enjoy free performances by:

Make Some Noise News: Hooded Fang, Harvest Festivals and Ukuleles

September 28, 2011 | TPL Local Music | Comments (0) Facebook Twitter More...

Hooded-Fang-Tosta-Mista-Album-Cover-1-914x1024Looking for fun local music-themed stuff to do for the next few weeks? Well, look no further! The Make Some Noise program has a pair of exciting events to tell you about.

This Saturday, stop by the Sanderson Library to rock out with acclaimed indie artists, Hooded Fang. As with all of our concerts, this one is free and all-ages.

By coincidence, on the same day, Scadding Court Community Centre’s Live Local Market is hosting a Harvest Festival to celebrate food grown and produced in and around Toronto. This day-long event will feature local food and fun activities for people of all ages. It’s a way to celebrate the harvest and to get people thinking about World Food Day coming up on October 16, 2011 – a day that highlights the issues behind poverty and hunger across the globe. (+ There's going to be a BOUNCY CASTLE! Yesssssss).

Mighty_uke_posterThen, next Saturday, the High Park Branch will be hosting a screening and workshop with the  creators of acclaimed Canadian documentary Mighty Uke. Watch the film, and then catch a couple of pointers on playing this wicked tiny instrument.
