Happy Birthday, Mem Fox and Dav Pilkey!
This week marks the birthdays of two of the greatest contemporary children’s authors; Dav Pilkey and Mem Fox. In celebration, I thought I would reminisce on the good times where my family was engrossed with these two fabulous authors.
To set the stage:
Two rambunctious kids run around a not-so-tidy house, underwear over their pants, red capes flowing behind them screaming “TRA LA LA!”
Oh wait, that was my house…. AND it was yesterday.
To be honest, I rather enjoy seeing them run around pretending to be Captain Underpants and spouting toilet humour from Pilkey’s books rather than the time they were both into pirates (because ouch).
Truth be told, I love Dav Pilkey’s books; I laugh out loud at the exact times my son does when we read together at night, and have fun repeating the funny parts to my three-year-old in language that she can understand. This has been a ritual since my son discovered Pilkey's books at the beginning of grade one, which is generally the age at Pilkey’s Captain Underpants, Dog Man and Ricky Ricotta begin to appeal to kids.
Reading aloud is a powerful activity – I actually take turns reading aloud with both kids every night. I discovered Mem Fox’s Reading Magic years and years ago when I was a Site Monitor for a FREE TPL program called Leading to Reading, where children in grades 1-6 who are reading below their grade level or need homework help are paired with volunteers on a weekly basis.
In Reading Magic, Mem Fox begins with the story of her daughter Chloe, and the fond times they had reading aloud together each night. When Chloe began school, her new teacher soon discovered that Chloe could already read. Why? Because her mother read aloud to her each night from the moment she was born.
Mem Fox then became an author herself, penning stories such as Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes and Time For Bed, two books that I fondly remember reading to my children the very first week they were born, and continue to read today.
