Construction and Engineering: A Hot Job Sector - Who Knew?!
Recently Randstad Canada sponsored a survey of 7,000 Canadians and discovered that the Engineering and Construction sector was rated the top (48%) in terms of job security and work atmosphere. This was closely followed by high-tech manufacturing (47.5%) for competitive salary, interesting job content, career progression opportunities, good training, work-life balance and strong management. Transport and logistics (46.4 per cent), raw materials (42.6 per cent) and services (41.9 per cent) were also listed as the most desirable sectors to work in by Canadians.
It doesn't surprise me that there continues to be a shortage of skilled labour. In fact, Mike Winterfield, Randstad Canada's president, concurs with the survey's findings, stating that among their clients, the demand for employment candidates in the engineering and construction sector increased 18.43 per cent in the first quarter of 2012 over Q1 2011. Randstad is seeing the greatest demand in roles such as construction management, electrical estimator, industrial designer and project manager.
