Thumbs-up for the Canadian director, Ariel Nasr, the producer of Buzkashi Boys, on the film's nomination in the Short Film Live Action cetegory at the 2013 Oscar Academy Awards. I learned about Ariel Nasr when I was preparing for the NFB Film Club screening of The Boxing Girls of Kabul at Agincourt Library

Ariel Nasr's career in film-making can be traced back to his collaboration with none other  than the NFB with the release of Good Morning Kandahar in 2008.

GoodMorningKandahar with movie title

Buzkashi Boys is the first production of the Afghan Film Project. Ariel Nasr founded The Afghan Film Project in order to create to  and sustain a local film-making industry in Afghanistan.

Buzkashi Boys is produced by an alliance of international and Afghan filmmakers and it follows the story of two young friends who aspire to become "Buzkashi Boys" by competing in the Buzkashi tournament, a traditonal horse riding sport in Afghanistan.  If you want learn all about the game of Buzkashi, go to  Gale Virtual Reference Library and sign in with your library card.

Articles and Online Research

SoS!!... all these sneaky deadlines that have been creeping towards you.....silently.....and without any warning, they start to scream and yell  demanding your immediate attention.  ReLaX and take a deep breath......everything you need, in order to finish that essay or this novel study, is literally at your fingertips, that is, if you have a library card . Hers is what you need to do:

The cool thing about that database is that it is a one-stop shopping for academic journals, magazines, books and other different types of references.

If you desperately need a "printed book" as a source for your research, go to Gale Virtual Reference LibraryThere, you will find actual books and encyclopedias on many subject areas.  You can search within the book you selected, and you can view or download your selected section in PDF format.

Two other general databases that can help you in almost all subject areas and offer a variety of document types including multimedia, primary documents and academic Journals are:  Britannica Online, and Discovering Collection.  For social issues or ethical debates, go straight to Opposing Viewpoints in Context.  That database is a wealth of information on your topic of interest. It provides a selection of opposing viewpoints on a particular issue along with a host of different resources including video, audio and image sources.

Since most of these databases are "Gale" databases, take a look at the Online Tutorials For Gale Databases blog

Hope some of these databases will help you in your endless stream of school assignments and reports.

Gravity -- From Falling Apples to Ripples in Space-time

AstronomyEveryone experiences the force of gravity.  It keeps us from flying into space and keeps the planets in orbit around the sun.

Monday, January 21 from 6:30-8:00 pm, join Ilana MacDonald (Dept. of Astronomy & Astrophsyics, UofT) as she traces the concept of gravity from humanity's earliest theories to her own fascinating research on the ripples in space-time caused by inspiralling binary black holes.
